Long transcription break.
000:30:31 Armstrong: [Garble] we are seeing stars at 30 minutes elapsed time, and the spacecraft is [garble] sunlight.
000:31:42 Armstrong: 31 minutes. Now we are seeing a lot of stars.
000:31:44 Scott: That could be a light.
000:31:49 Armstrong: [Garble] I see a light on the ground.
000:31:56 Armstrong: [Garble] on the horizon. That's where the light would be, I think.
000:32:02 Scott: You do?
000:32:03 Armstrong: I do see thruster flashings now. Platform Aligning on the Secondary Scanner.

Transcription break.
000:38:08 Scott: It reminds me of an oil flame that you see over
000:38:11 Armstrong: [Garble] here [garble]. We're at 38 minutes and I noticed the thrusters are firing out the right side only. Now this may be a Platform Mode, or it could be due to the fact that it's taking care of the water boiler exhaust.
000:38:20 Armstrong: 38 minutes elapsed time. The night side - we have a well-definable horizon, but we have stars visible below the horizon, and that one property in comparing the horizon is probably the best one to make a mark on.
000:39:01 Scott: Okay. At 40 minutes and about 10 seconds, the S-3 Unit Number 1 is activated.
Transcription break.
000:40:25 Scott: Okay.

001:21:18 Armstrong: 1:34:37 is start time. [Garble].
001:21:27 Scott: You understand [garble] Platform. You can see out the window that it's - no, that it's 90 degrees, anyway.
001:21:42 Armstrong: [Garble.]
001:21:43 Scott: If you align it, it takes the [garble].
001:21:44 Armstrong: I agree.
001:21:46 Armstrong: If you align it in a 3-feet-per-second burn, if you are 10 degrees off on the Platform, it'd be hard for us to see it, as far as the Delta-V operation is. So why don't we - as we come upon the stage we'll put it in SEF [Sharp End Forward] for a little while. Well, 5 minutes before you're supposed to go to Orbit Rate. Okay. I'll just put it in SEF Comp right now. Kind of fun.
001:22:28 Scott: It really kicks it around there, doesn't it?
001:22:31 Armstrong: Yes. It's winding right up.
001:22:41 Scott: Wonder where we'll be at 1:34. Oh, I know! It's on the - on the - we'll be right over Houston on this pass.
001:22:58 Armstrong: [Garble]. Try and get that camera.
001:23:00 Scott: Okay.
001:23:13 Scott: 1:34 [garble].
001:23:18 Armstrong: [Garble]. Hang on.
001:23:22 Scott: 1:34?
001:23:25 Armstrong: No, I'm sorry - Yes. l:34.
001:23:26 Scott: Okay. All right, All right. Just a minute.
001:23:34 Armstrong: [Garble.]
001:23:37 Scott: Okay.
001:24:20 Scott: We'll have to ask Houston, won't we?
001:24:22 Armstrong: Think we're going to have to.
001:24:24 Scott: Think we ought to.
001:24:25 Armstrong: Think we ought to [garble].
001:25:00 Scott: Oh! Look at that one!
001:25:51 Armstrong: What was that time? 1:34 what?
001:26:01 Scott: 1:34:37.
001:26:26 Scott: You got your...
001:27:05 Armstrong: What's the matter?
001:27:08 Scott: The thermometer is [garble].
001:27:10 Armstrong: Yes. The thermometer's always a nuisance.
001:27:12 Armstrong: I'm not sick! Tell them I'm not sick!
001:27:34 Armstrong: 1:27:33. Right?
001:27:39 Scott: Well, I would say maybe we'd better do [garble].

001:30:07 Scott: Right.
001:30:13 Scott: 1:34:37. We want to have a 5-second burn and forward firing thrusters will give us a Retrograde Maneuver.
001:30:20 Armstrong: Okay. I think I'll burn it back.
001:30:22 Scott: Okay.
001:30:24 Armstrong: All right.
001:30:28 Scott: Sort of like to know how it works.
001:30:30 Armstrong: Yes, I think we ought to take a picture.
001:30:32 Scott: Yes.
001:30:49 Armstrong: Would be nice, but I - nice [garble].
001:31:04 Scott: Nice cloud formations!

001:31:13 Scott: Hope you remember to look up when we start going after the Agena.
001:31:20 CC: Gemini VIII, this is Houston CapCom. We're standing by for your burn.
001:31:28 CC: Roger. Got 3 minutes to go.
001:31:44 Armstrong: Pressure coming up [garble] approach.
001:31:51 Scott: We cross Houston at the burn; it's between Houston and - the Cape.

001:32:08 Armstrong: [Garble] the Controller is off and on. Start Comp [garble].
001:32:22 Scott: I have a shoreline in sight here. I really don't have Houston picked out though.
001:32:30 Armstrong: [Garble.]
001:32:46 Scott: We are coming up on 32.42 [garble] Houston [garble].
001:32:49 Armstrong: I've got it.

001:33:25 Scott: Save that gas.
001:33:30 Armstrong: Coming up on 1:33:37.
001:33:34 Scott: Okay. We're 1 minute to burn, going right over the coastline now...
001:33:39 CC: Roger, VIII. Stand by for a 30-second Mark to your burn.
001:33:42 Scott: Okay.
001:34:08 CC: Mark. 30 seconds to burn.
001:34:10 Scott: Okay.
001:34:30 Armstrong: Keep an eye out the window and see what it looks like with this forward firing.
001:34:35 Armstrong: Mark.
001:34:36 Armstrong: Burn.
001:34:37 CC: Roger.
001:34:42 Armstrong: Purging.
001:34:43 Armstrong: Mark.
001:34:44 Armstrong: 2, 1, burn.
001:34:46 Scott: Roger.
001:34:47 Armstrong: Fine. Burn end.
001:34:48 Armstrong: Mark.
001:34:51 Scott: What number?
001:34:53 Armstrong: Minus 0001.
001:34:0540 Scott: I got that.
001:34:55 Scott: 2. Okay. 82. That's...
001:35:08 CC: Gemini VIII, this is Houston. We're placing your T/M switch to Real Time/Delay Time.
001:35:10 Armstrong: Okay.
001:35:13 Armstrong: Yes. A real good idea.
001:35:15 Scott: Okay. Let's try it.
001:35:21 Armstrong: Wrong way.
001:35:25 Scott: Address 82 is not the [garble].
001:35:27 Scott: Address 82 is minus, so we want to go...
001:35:28 Armstrong: Let's try it again.
001:35:29 Scott: Okay.
001:35:33 CC: Gemini VIII, this is Houston requesting your Tape Playback switch to Continuous.
001:35:37 Armstrong: Oh, shoot! Stand by.
001:35:39 Scott: Stand by, Houston.
001:35:40 CC: Roger. Will do.
001:35:42 Armstrong: Let's try Address 81 again and see what it is.
001:35:52 Scott: See it?
001:36:00 Armstrong: It's building up now.
001:36:10 Scott: Fine. Okay. Now to put - now you're 82 [garble] 80, 81, 82 is down. You should go. Yes. I guess you're right. It should go.
001:36:14 Armstrong: I think I was.
001:36:15 Scott: Okay. I understand.
001:36:22 CC: Gemini VIII. This is Houston. You don't have to answer. We'd like to have your computer in Prelaunch when you can.
001:36:55 Armstrong: [Garble.]
001:37:02 Scott: Okay.
001:37:03 Armstrong: That's almost a foot per second.
001:37:11 Scott: Computer's in Prelaunch. We're putting Tape Playback to Continuous.
001:37:14 CC: Roger. Thank you. Understand you were to take out residuals. How did it go?
001:37:24 Armstrong: Yes, we took out the residuals, but they seem to be building up on us with time.
001:37:31 CC: Roger. That is part of your accelerometer bias.
001:37:36 Armstrong: Yes, I think that's right. Are you going to update that bias?
001:37:43 CC: Whenever you're ready, we're going to send you an accelerometer update.
001:37:46 Armstrong: Okay. I think we're probably - stand by a minute.
001:37:50 CC: Roger. We're standing by.
001:37:57 Scott: What was the last number?
001:37:58 Armstrong: 81 was a 3.
001:38:00 Armstrong: 80 was a zero.
001:38:07 Armstrong: Okay. Tell them to go ahead.
001:38:10 Scott: Okay. Go ahead and send the new bias for us.
001:38:14 CC: Roger. Coming up.
001:38:23 Armstrong: We have not gotten a light yet.
001:38:26 CC: Stand by. It's coming, VIII.
001:39:01 Armstrong: Now my impression, Partner, is that 82 hit the button.
001:39:06 Scott: So you're right.
001:39:11 Armstrong: Roger.
001:39:15 Armstrong: Got a light. Reset.
001:39:16 CC: Roger. Understand you have the light.
001:39:29 Scott: Okay. You have the Tape Playback in Continuous.
001:39:39 Scott: Hey, we still - they got the Tape Playback in Continuous now. You know that?
001:39:54 CC: Gemini VIII, this is Houston. The accelerometer bias update was good.
001:39:59 Armstrong: Roger. Thank you.
001:40:01 Armstrong: Say again, Dave.
001:40:03 Scott: They have the Tape Playback in Continuous. We're not going to [garble].
001:40:13 Armstrong: We're really [garble] update [garble].
001:40:50 CC: Gemini VIII, Houston CapCom here.
001:40:53 Armstrong: Go ahead.
001:40:54 CC: Roger. Would you please verify that your Antenna Select switch is in Adapter? Over.
001:41:01 Armstrong: Roger.
001:41:03 CC: Thank you.
001:41:41 CC: Gemini VIII, Houston CapCom. I have your Phase Adjustment Maneuver update if you're ready to copy.

001:42:56 Armstrong: What was that time, Dave?
001:43:00 Scott: The time? 02:18:26.
001:43:06 CC: And Gemini VIII, would you put your Tape Playback switch to Command?
001:43:12 Armstrong: Tape Playback in Command.
001:43:14 CC: Roger. And T/M switch to Real-Time and ACQ.
001:43:14 Armstrong: Real-Time and ACQ.
001:43:33 Scott: Say, you sort of lose a little bit of voice up here, you know.
001:43:39 Scott: I noticed it on everybody that has flown.
001:43:49 Armstrong: Let's see now. Is this - this is just a one-man package?
001:43:53 Scott: We have some food in here, if you want some food.
001:43:56 Armstrong: Well, this is Day 1 Meal B for me, and I think yours is in there. I think we ought to go ahead and have one because...
001:44:02 Scott: Yes. You're right.
001:44:04 Armstrong: ...because we're not going to get much of a chance after - we've got the best part of an hour here.
001:44:35 CC: Gemini VIII, this is Houston. You'll probably expect an update on that Phase-Adjust Maneuver over Ascension. Over.
001:44:42 Armstrong: Okay. Understand.
Transcription break.
001:47:05 Scott: Let's see. Have we got everything stowed that we want to stow?
001:47:10 Armstrong: No, not really. I've got to work on the TV monitor a little bit. My helmet - it's really not - doesn't really have a place to rest on that.
001:47:18 Scott: There isn't any. I thought there was supposed to be...
001:47:20 Armstrong: Yes, I did too.
001:47:25 Scott: We'll write it up.
001:47:37 Scott: Stow in here someday.
001:47:43 Scott: Day 2, Meal A.
001:47:44 Scott: See it?
001:47:45 Scott: There.
001:47:54 Scott: That doesn't sound right, does it?
001:47:56 Armstrong: That's for tomorrow morning, I guess. There must be another package over there someplace. Let me look in the Flight Plan to make sure.
001:48:22 Armstrong: Okay, It's in your right-hand food box.
001:48:25 Scott: I sort of wanted to get this darn thing cleaned out.
001:48:29 Armstrong: Yes.
001:48:41 Scott: Day 1, Meal B. I'll buy that.
001:49:32 Armstrong: Man, that's peculiar!.
001:49:34 Scott: What did you say?
001:49:37 Armstrong: The water is kind of peculiar.
001:49:39 Scott: Oh, great:
001:49:51 Armstrong: I think there's some air bubbles in it (water).
001:49:52 Scott: Is that right?
001:49:53 Armstrong: Yes.
001:51:18 Armstrong: They got some LOX in the water again.
001:51:20 Scott: Have they had the problem before?
001:51:22 Armstrong: Yes, they sure have.
001:51:46 Armstrong: Ready.
001:51:50 Scott: LOX.
001:51:56 Armstrong: What?
001:51:58 Scott: Do you want it?
001:52:00 Armstrong: Okay.
001:52:25 Scott: Sure does.
001:53:33 Armstrong: I find that there is a lot less room in this cockpit than I thought there was.
001:53:37 Scott: You hoped there was. Right?
001:53:43 Armstrong: There's a heck of a lot less room!

003:05:09 Armstrong: Okay. Thank you.
003:05:15 CC: Gemini VIII, this is Houston. How is your Platform alignment coming along?
003:05:22 Armstrong: Stand by.
003:06:00 Armstrong: Houston, we're not in Alignment right now. Did you want us, for some reason, to align?
003:06:06 CC: Negative. We'd - Roger. We are curious how your flight - your alignment was going since we got an extra 2 feet per second, which our tracking had indicated had to be put in, and it came at a late time, that's all.
003:06:25 Armstrong: Okay. We had not alignd prior to the burn because we didn't have - we didn't think we'd have to have the burn. And we believe we still have some bias errors in the accelerometers.
003:06:36 CC: Roger. Understand. And also be informed that the Agena is now configured TDA north and we were just curious how your alignment has been going. Does it look like you've been getting good alignment?
003:06:47 Armstrong: That's correct. We have been getting good alignments.

The yaw needle is wavering back and forth, perhaps plus or minus 1 degree. And a note here that the trouble we've had is getting rid of the residuals. We bring the residuals down to a small number, and then the next reading they would increase, and the next reading they would decrease. It would be difficult to tell when we got to actual zero residual. The Ground said we didn't have any. The accelerometer bias had looked good, but it looks like something is getting to us here.

005:01:33 Scott: 42: 15.5, 47.74, 137, 45.2.
005:01:46 CC: Roger. And would you confirm that your Encoder is on?
005:01:53 Scott: It's on now.
005:01:54 CC: Roger. Thank you.
005:02:18 Armstrong: Going into darkness at - let's see - 05:02. We lost a visual on the Agena and I had the ACQ light right away. Range was 45 miles. It's very hard to see, but it looks like a sixth-magnitude star, I'd say.
005:03:04 Scott: 23-30 seconds to a readout.
005:03:36 Scott: Gemini VIII with another point.
005:03:38 CC: Roger. Go ahead.
005:03:39 Scott: Number 43: 17.2, 45.5, 138, 34.3, 102.
005:03:51 CC: Roger.
005:03:54 Armstrong: [Garble.]
Long transcription break.
005:11:52 Armstrong: Close Loop. Giving us 26 forward.
005:11:53 Scott: Okay.
005:11:54 Armstrong: 7 left, 6 up.
005:11:55 Scott: Okay. Attitude Control, Rate Command. Maneuver Controller, On.
005:12:02 Armstrong: Okay. Did you get...
005:12:04 Scott: 15 seconds till we read out.
005:12:05 Scott: 10, - 5, 4, 3, 2, 1...
005:12:14 Scott: Mark.
005:12:57 Armstrong: Oh, boy!
005:13:11 Scott: Are you sure you had the right angles?
005:13:14 Armstrong: Well, the radar needles were wandering around some, Dave. I can't really be sure. I was - as best I could - in the middle of the oscillation.
005:13:28 Scott: I get an horrendous 20 - 25-feet-per-second down, Neil.
005:13:42 Armstrong: I just can't see any possible reason for that.
005:13:47 Scott: What does the chart look like?
005:13:48 Armstrong: A plot. We're up above it.
005:13:57 Scott: Yes, but I mean does it look like...
005:13:59 Armstrong: I can't talk to you. I've got to figure this. I'm sorry, old Buddy. I really have to look at this.
005:14:04 Armstrong: 25-feet-per-second forward. Boy, oh boy! Look at it!
005:14:16 Scott: Look at the plot. To have 25 down we've got to have a tremendous ellipticity.
005:14:35 Armstrong: I have to start counting.
005:14:37 Scott: We're steady right above the line all the way.
005:14:39 Armstrong: Okay. We're going to go with the Closed Loop.
005:14:40 Scott: What've you got?
005:14:42 Armstrong: 25 forward, 8 left, 3 up, and I'm going to Rate Command.
005:14:49 Armstrong: Ready to back me on the clock?
005:14:52 Scott: Yes. Any time.
005:14:54 Armstrong: 3, 2, 1, burn.
005:14:57 Scott: Good!
005:14:59 Scott: Did you burn at 26:10?
005:15:00 Armstrong: No. That - that's right. I got it. It was about 30 - 34 - 36, as a matter of fact.
005:15:25 Scott: Okay. There's 30 seconds.
005:15:35 Scott: Okay. Agena is in center of reticle. Attitude Control, Pulse. Set your ET to 3 minutes and stand by.
005:15:42 Armstrong: Okay. I've got it circled.
005:15:46 Armstrong: Okay. Get the Controller Off. Okay. Now again.
005:15:53 Scott: Okay. I need a readout at 1 minute, which is in 20 seconds from now.
005:15:57 Armstrong: Okay.
005:15:59 Scott: Don't hit the Computer switch.
005:16:02 Armstrong: Right.
005:16:06 Scott: 10 seconds. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1...
005:16:12 Scott: Mark.
005:16:47 Scott: Start - set your clock for 3 minutes. Can't you do that?
005:16:48 Armstrong: It gets - it's running 2 - 3 minutes now.
005:16:53 Scott: Set it at 3 minutes. I'll start you out.
005:16:54 Armstrong: Okay. [Garble].
005:17:04 Scott: 10 seconds going up to 2 minutes.
005:17:13 Armstrong: Is it 2 minutes?
005:17:16 Scott: Yes.
005:17:21 Armstrong: Okay. Now we're going to want to send Spiral Antennas to the Agena.
005:17:33 Armstrong: At 5.
Communications via Tananarive, Madagascar
005:18:21 Scott: About 3 minutes.
005:18:23 Armstrong: No, I'm sorry. I've just got too much to do over here to catch up with you.
005:18:34 CC: Gemini VIII, this is Houston. You need not answer. We're standing by for information.
005:18:45 Armstrong: Gemini VIII has burned TPI on Closed Loop.
005:18:59 Scott: 15 seconds to a readout and then 4 minutes.
005:19:01 Armstrong: Okay.
005:19:11 Scott: 4, 3, 2, 1...
005:19:16 Scott: Mark.
Transcription break.
005:21:06 Armstrong: Okay. We need a readout at 7 minutes, which is a minute from now. Is that correct?
005:21:13 Scott: That's correct. A minute from now.
005:21:16 Armstrong: Okay. Here goes on the antenna.
005:21:23 Armstrong: 270 coming out.
005:21:24 Scott: Right.
005:21:25 Armstrong: 270. I have a MAP.
05:21:27
005:21:27 Scott: Okay.
005:21:30 Scott: Yes. That gave us a little radar glitch when you did that.
005:21:33 Armstrong: That's interesting.
005:21:35 Scott: Yes.
005:21:36 Armstrong: Okay. I have a solution here. At 4.5, 10-feet-per-second down.
005:21:42 Scott: Okay.
005:21:52 Armstrong: I need a readout in 20 seconds.
005:22:11 Scott: 4, 3, 2, 1...
005:22:16 Scott: Mark.
005:22:18 Armstrong: Sorry. Turn it off.
005:22:28 Scott: Don't have a good visual.
005:22:59 Scott: We're still inside the curve.
005:23:23 Armstrong: How much?
005:23:25 Scott: See, right there.
005:23:59 Scott: Hey, now it's getting our boresights up.
005:24:16 Armstrong: Think those zeros might be lagging a little bit.
005:24:45 Scott: Okay. 30 seconds to go.
005:24:49 Armstrong: Okay.
005:24:59 Scott: 15.
005:25:09 Scott: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1...
005:25:13 Scott: Mark.
005:25:23 Armstrong: Might have been a tenth lower than one you read.
005:25:25 Scott: Okay.
005:25:57 Armstrong: This gives me up just a little - not much.
005:26:23 Armstrong: Oh boy! This is bad!
005:26:28 Scott: 4 forward.
005:26:30 Armstrong: And 2½ up.
005:26:33 Scott: That sounds more like it.
005:26:59 Armstrong: Now we're getting 12 forward, 1 right, 6 up.
005:27:04 Scott: 12 forward, 1 right.
005:27:08 Armstrong: Yes.
005:27:09 Scott: And 6 up?
005:27:11 Armstrong: Yes.
005:27:13 Scott: Your choice.
005:27:15 Armstrong: Okay. We'll burn the Closed Loop.
005:27:16 Scott: Okay.
005:27:18 Armstrong: Ready?
005:27:21 Scott: Any time.
005:27:23 Armstrong: 3, 2, 1, burning.
005:27:28 Scott: Okay.
005:27:35 Scott: There's 10 seconds.
005:27:45 Scott: Okay.
005:27:52 Scott: Okay. At 13 minutes we'll need a readout, which is coming up in 15 seconds.
005:27:59 Armstrong: Okay. I'll be on.
005:28:11 Scott: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1...
005:28:16 Scott: Mark.
005:28:17 Armstrong: It's on.
005:28:42 Armstrong: 12 miles out.
005:28:52 Armstrong: Oh, that looks good!
005:28:54 Armstrong: Elliptic - we must have had an ellipticity because we're - swinging into it.
005:28:59 Scott: We're swinging into it?
005:29:01 Armstrong: Yes.
005:29:06 Armstrong: Okay. We're getting a little Out-Of-Plane now.
005:29:21 Armstrong: Boresight's holding pretty well.
005:29:30 Scott: Half-way point now.
005:29:40 Armstrong: Wasn't on very good. I was about a degree off.
005:29:42 Scott: Okay. I'll get it later.
005:29:57 Armstrong: You on now?
005:29:59 Scott: Any time you say.
005:30:06 Armstrong: Okay.
005:30:25 Armstrong: I'm about two-tenths high, I think.
005:30:44 Armstrong: Now we're getting some error [garble].
005:30:59 Armstrong: An error, I'm afraid.
005:31:06 Scott: Got a Mark in 10 seconds - about 10 seconds.
005:31:09 Armstrong: Okay.
005:31:12 Scott: 4, 3, 2, 1...
005:31:16 Scott: Mark.
Transcription break.
005:32:33 Armstrong: Range-Rate is pretty erratic, I'm afraid.
005:32:47 Scott: We've got to get 3 aft and 2½ up.
005:32:49 Armstrong: Okay. I like that.
005:32:59 Scott: Still sliding out in front of me, but getting into the old slot.
Communications via Coastal Sentry Quebec
005:42:09 Armstrong: Okay. I just don't like the Out-Of-Plane, but...
005:42:11 CC: Gemini VIII, CSQ. We have nothing for you. We'll be standing by.
005:42:13 Scott: We're on the way.
005:42:16 CC: Roger.
005:42:18 Scott: 2½ miles out in Closed Loop.
005:42:21 CC: Roger.
005:42:28 Scott: Is there any [garble]?
005:42:35 Armstrong: Okay. I'm losing my star background.
005:42:40 Scott: Okay. 2.1 miles, 45 feet per second - 49 feet per second.
005:42:43 Armstrong: You're - okay.
005:42:45 Scott: For this range you're in pretty good shape. You're almost nominal for this range.
005:42:52 Armstrong: Okay. I'm going to start braking down a little bit very shortly here because we're at 15K. We're inside 15K and I'd like to...
005:43:04 Scott: Yes, we're inside 15K.
005:43:08 Armstrong: How about if I brake off?
005:43:09 Scott: Yes, I agree.
005:43:25 Armstrong: Okay. Now give me a digital range for the remainder of 20 seconds.
005:43:37 Scott: Okay. You're 10,000 feet.
005:43:40 Armstrong: Okay. And Range Rate?
005:43:41 Scott: 44 feet per second, but let me get another readout on that.
005:43:44 Armstrong: Okay. I'm reading.
005:43:47 Scott: Ready.
005:43:59 Scott: 36 feet per second.
005:44:08 Armstrong: We'll have the horizon coming into view pretty soon and probably the sun in our eyes. In case that happens, I'll have to go to Full-Bright on the instruments.
005:44:16 Scott: That's okay. Go ahead.
005:44:25 Armstrong: Okay.
005:44:32 Scott: It looks pretty reasonable to me.
005:44:35 Armstrong: Anything you can tell now...
005:44:36 Scott: You're looking good. 8,100 feet, 39 feet per second, I get.
005:44:40 Armstrong: I'd better back off a bit.
005:44:41 Scott: Back off [garble].
005:44:42 Armstrong: Yes.
005:45:01 Armstrong: Okay. 30 now.
005:45:08 Scott: Okay. Let me read out here.
005:45:20 Scott: 6,000 feet.
005:45:23 Armstrong: Okay.
005:45:25 Scott: 31 feet per second. A little high.
005:45:30 Armstrong: Okay. Let's back off a little more.
005:45:44 Scott: Okay.
005:45:52 Scott: 5,500 feet.
005:45:59 Scott: 24 feet per second.
005:46:04 Armstrong: Seems the minimum. Pretty good now.
005:46:06 Armstrong: Where did you get the Range Rate?
005:46:07 Scott: 24 feet per second.
005:46:08 Armstrong: Pretty good.
005:46:11 Armstrong: I'll be backing down a little more now.
005:46:23 Scott: Okay. 22 feet per second.
005:46:25 Armstrong: [Garble.]
005:46:32 Scott: I can't.
005:46:35 Armstrong: Can't you?
005:46:36 Scott: No. I'm busy.
005:46:49 Scott: Okay. 4,500 feet.
005:46:52 Armstrong: Okay.
005:46:59 Scott: 17 feet per second.
005:47:11 Scott: 3,700 feet.
005:47:13 Armstrong: What was the Range Rate?
005:47:18 Scott: Coming up.
005:47:19 Scott: 19 feet per second.
005:47:20 Armstrong: Okay. I'm going to back off a little more.
005:47:22 Scott: Okay.
005:47:44 Armstrong: Out-Of-Plane seems to be drifting back a little bit.
005:47:49 Scott: Okay. You're 3,400 feet.
005:47:59 Scott: 17 feet per second.
005:48:16 Armstrong: I'm losing my Range Rate. It's [garble].
005:48:20 Scott: You're 2,880 feet.
005:48:32 Scott: You did lose your Range Rate a bit, there.
005:48:42 Scott: [Garble.]
005:48:44 Armstrong: I can see the back lights, now.
005:48:47 Armstrong: 2,500 feet.
005:48:50 Scott: Yes. So can I.
005:48:56 Armstrong: Range Rate?
005:48:58 Scott: 2,400 feet.
005:48:59 Scott: Range Rate's 10 feet per second.
005:49:16 Scott: You're now at 2,200 feet.
005:49:27 Armstrong: Range Rate?
005:49:42 Armstrong: Range Rate?
005:49:44 Scott: 1,900 feet.
005:49:59 Scott: 10 feet per second.
005:50:06 Armstrong: Put in a little [garble] to the left.
005:50:18 Armstrong: [Garble.]
005:50:23 Armstrong: Back off now.
005:50:25 Scott: 1,680 feet.
005:50:28 Scott: 7 feet per second.
005:50:30 Armstrong: Okay.
005:50:37 Scott: Chase it down a little bit.
005:50:40 Scott: Gad: That's just amazing! [Garble] camera is running.
005:50:44 Armstrong: [Garble.]
005:50:48 Scott: [Garble.]
005:51:30 Scott: Back to work.
005:51:40 Scott: You're about 1,100 feet.
005:51:47 Scott: 5 feet per second.
005:52:32 Scott: You're 900 feet.
005:52:35 Scott: 5 feet per second.
005:53:01 Armstrong: That's just unbelievable! Unbelievable!
005:53:08 Armstrong: I can't believe it!
005:53:10 Scott: Yes, I can't either. Outstanding Job, Coach!
005:53:13 Armstrong: Way to go, Partner!
005:53:16 Scott: You did it, boy! You did a good job!
005:53:17 Armstrong: It takes two to tango.
005:53:20 Scott: Say again?
005:53:21 Armstrong: It takes two of us.
005:53:25 Scott: Okay. We're at [garble].
005:53:27 Armstrong: Back off.
005:53:32 Scott: Okay. We're 700 feet.
005:53:42 Scott: 11 feet per second. Let me re-do that one.
005:53:48 Scott: I like 7. You buy 7 feet per second?
005:53:52 Armstrong: Yes.
005:53:56 Scott: Boy! Look at that sucker!
005:54:06 Scott: That's beautiful!
005:54:07 Armstrong: See the dipole?
005:54:08 Scott: Do I ever: I'll say I see everything on that fellow!
005:54:17 Scott: I've got 18 pictures.
005:54:18 Scott: I don't have the range sight on. Hope I'm hitting them.
005:54:20 Scott: 250 and 11.
005:54:25 Scott: Got yours set?
005:54:28 Armstrong: [Garble.]
005:54:29 Armstrong: [Garble.]
005:54:30 Scott: Yes.
005:54:32 Armstrong: I'm in 25. [Garble].
005:54:34 Scott: No! Heck no!
005:54:36 Scott: Dang target. You should be et infinity, 1/200 and f:16.
005:54:54 Scott: No, we don't have a spot in here. I guess we'll have plenty of time to do that.
005:55:04 Armstrong: Okay. Now I'll get back to work.
005:55:11 Scott: 240 feet [garble].
005:55:23 Scott: 5 feet per second we're still getting.
005:55:25 Armstrong: Okay. [Garble].
005:55:37 Armstrong: I guess we could turn the ACQ lights off.
005:55:42 Scott: Yes. I'll go back to the Check List.
005:55:52 Scott: Okay. 250 coming up.
005:55:57 Scott: Got a Map?
005:56:01 Armstrong: Okay. Now 230.
005:56:02 Scott: Okay.
005:56:05 Scott: UHF Disabled. You agree?
005:56:08 Armstrong: Yes.
005:56:10 Scott: Got a Map?
005:56:12 CC: Gemini VIII, Gemini VIII, this is Houston CapCom. Standing by for any Rendezvous remarks. Over.
005:56:19 Scott: You tell them.
005:56:23 Armstrong: Flight Houston, this is Gemini VIII. We're stationkeeping on the Agena at about 150 feet.
005:56:30 Scott: [Garble.]
005:56:35 Scott: Yaw left [garble].
005:56:37 Scott: That's good.
005:56:42 Scott: Right. Now I'll get a better picture.
005:56:47 Scott: Got the spotmeter over there anywhere handy?
005:56:50 Armstrong: [Garble]. It's supposed to be at the back of the box here.
005:56:57 Scott: Okay. Stay on the Agena. Don't sweat this one. We'll be around for a long time yet.
005:57:08 Scott: Okay. What does your Propellant Quantity read now?
005:57:11 Armstrong: 55 percent.
005:57:13 Scott: That's nice.
005:57:20 Armstrong: Gemini VIII is stationkeeping on the Agena.
005:57:32 Scott: Back to the Flight Plan. We just started today.
005:57:37 Armstrong: That's right.
005:57:14 CC: Gemini VIII, this is Houston. You are unreadable. We will stand by for Hawaii acquisition.
005:57:38 Armstrong: Okay. We have here - I guess I can turn the radar to Standby.
005:57:42 Scott: Yes, radar Standby.
005:57:54 Armstrong: [Garble.]
005:58:13 Scott: 1/200 and f:16, it says in here.
005:58:20 Scott: We should have been there at 5:42. We were there by 5:58, so we're late - by gosh! 16 minutes.
Communications via Hawaii, US
005:58:58 CC: Gemini VIII, Hawaii.
005:59:01 Armstrong: Go ahead.
005:59:03 CC: Roger. How are you doing?
005:59:04 Armstrong: Stationkeeping at about 150feet.
005:59:08 CC: Roger. Have you transmitted UHF Disable?
005:59:11 Armstrong: That is correct.
005:59:12 CC: Roger. We have an SPC load to transmit. Would you Enable it, please?
005:59:17 Armstrong: Sure will.
005:59:23 Armstrong: 231, coming up.
005:59:25 Armstrong: I didn't get it. We'll have to pitch down a little bit here.
005:59:35 Scott: We're on a radar Standby. No wonder.
005:59:37 Scott: Radar On.
005:59:38 Armstrong: Was it Standby?
005:59:39 Scott: It was Standby [garble].
005:59:41 Armstrong: Okay.
005:59:44 Scott: Okay. 231.
005:59:48 Armstrong: Got a Map?
005:59:52 Scott: I can't find it.
006:00:18 CC: Gemini VIII, Hawaii.
006:00:20 Armstrong: Go ahead.
006:00:23 CC: Roger. Would you turn off your Encoder, please?
006:00:30 Armstrong: Okay.
006:00:35 Armstrong: Doing a little POA work up here.
006:00:43 Scott: Our Agena looks in fine shape. The TDA is out. It's Rigidized. The whiskers are sticking out as expected on the TDA. The dipole is up. The engine looks good. And we've turned the ACQ lights off.
006:00:45 CC: Roger. Copy.
006:00:52 Scott: I don't believe it!
006:00:54 CC: Gemini VIII. We'd also like an OAMS propellant reading.
006:00:56 Armstrong: We're at 55 percent.
006:00:59 CC: Say 59?
006:01:01 Armstrong: That's 55 percent.
006:01:04 CC: 55. Roger.
006:01:06 CC: We're standing by to copy the Agena-Status Display Panel readings.
006:01:11 Scott: Yes, you better get it...
006:01:12 Armstrong: Okay. We'll have to get over on that side of it.
006:01:23 Scott: Better get busy...
006:01:24 CC: Gemini VIII, Hawaii.
006:01:25 Armstrong: Stationkeeping here.
006:01:26 Scott: Go ahead.
006:01:29 CC: We have a Yaw Maneuver time for you, if you're ready to copy.
006:01:35 Scott: Okay. Go ahead.
006:01:37 CC: Roger. Yaw Maneuver at 07:10:00. That's GET.
006:01:48 Scott: Roger. Understand. Yaw Maneuver 07:10:00.
006:01:52 CC: Also, when you are at plus 96 degree heading, the Agena will go to Flight Control Mode 7 for 30 seconds.
006:02:04 Scott: Understand. 96 degree FC-7 for 30.
006:02:07 CC: And the SPC load we're transmitting contains the Agena clock reset. We're very anxious for it to be executed even if it cuts short the Platform Parallelism.
006:02:20 Scott: What was that? Did you catch it?
006:02:23 Armstrong: No I didn't.
006:02:24 Armstrong: Say that last one again, please.
006:02:25 CC: Roger. The SPC load we're transmitting contains a clock reset for the Agena.
006:02:32 Scott: Roger.
006:02:33 CC: We're anxious for it to be executed - even if it means cutting the Platform Parallelism test short.
006:02:41 Scott: Roger. Understand. The SPC has priority over the Platform Parallelism.
006:02:47 Scott: In essence. Is that right?
006:02:49 CC: That's affirmative.
006:02:51 Scott: Okay.
006:02:59 Armstrong: Man! That's great!
006:03:01 Scott: Man, that's really slick!
006:03:08 Armstrong: A bit of all right!
006:03:11 Scott: Okay. The first thing we really have to do - Platform Parallelism 06:50 to 07:10. They're giving us the SPC loaded Yaw Maneuver. It looks like at nominal time. So they're going to give you that time.
006:03:27 Scott: Now I'll check your little Status Display for you.
006:03:40 Scott: I bet those Lockheed guys are just jumping up and down.
006:03:41 Armstrong: The S-10 is on.
006:03:44 Scott: Yes.
006:03:47 Armstrong: Okay.
006:03:52 Armstrong: Man, it flies easy: I'd love to let you do it, but...
006:03:56 Scott: Oh no!
006:03:57 Armstrong: I think I better get my practice while I can.
006:03:59 Scott: Man, I'll have my chance!
006:04:00 Armstrong: Get yours later. Okay?
006:04:04 Scott: Yes. I wouldn't even take it if you gave it to me.
006:04:09 Scott: It's up to you; stick with it.
006:04:11 Scott: More you get now, the better off you're going to be when...
006:04:13 Armstrong: Do we have STB bright?
006:04:16 Scott: Should have.
006:04:18 Scott: I think I'll get the section here in a minute and we'll be able to see something. Let me check the systems. Cabin pressure, that's good.
006:04:28 Scott: Your OAMS source pressure is 190.
006:04:35 Armstrong: 1900?
006:04:37 Scott: You always get me on those.
006:04:40 Scott: ECS O2 is rather high. 810.
006:04:44 Armstrong: When that sun comes in, boy it is warm!
006:04:52 Armstrong: Man, this is easy!
006:04:53 Scott: Is it really?
006:04:54 Armstrong: This stationkeeping, there's nothing to it.
006:04:56 Armstrong: I can't understand why our recorder isn't working.
006:05:01 Scott: I don't either, except maybe it's not running.
006:05:04 Scott: Want me to turn to Off now?
006:05:07 Armstrong: Tape recorder is on but just doesn't budge now.
006:05:09 Armstrong: Sure does.
006:05:13 Scott: Oh, oh! Fuel Cell H2 Heater circuit breaker popped.
006:05:20 Scott: I'm trying to reset it. It's reset.
006:05:25 Armstrong: Okay. Now a - this is - this is getting into stationkeeping attitude for EDA. Boy [garble].
006:06:01 Scott: Okay. I can see the Status Display. - Main Green, Secondary Hi, On; Secondary Lo, On; Power and Attitude, On.
006:06:11 Armstrong: Okay.
006:06:13 Armstrong: That means everything should be...
006:06:15 Scott: I can't see any dark line on those - just too far away now.
006:06:23 Armstrong: Okay.
006:06:25 Scott: I'll give this sextant a 1/10 - a little [garble].
006:06:30 Scott: We're still...
006:06:32 CC: Gemini VIII, Hawaii.
006:06:33 Armstrong: Go ahead.
006:06:35 CC: We'd like to know when you first saw the acquisition lights as you approached.
006:06:39 Armstrong: We'll have to go back on the data and dig that out.
006:06:42 CC: Roger.
006:06:43 Armstrong: About 45 [garble].
006:06:44 Scott: No. No it's about 56 miles. Right?
006:06:52 Armstrong: No, not 56. I think it was 45 miles.
006:06:53 Scott: We think it was 45 miles, but we'll have to check on the tape.
006:06:56 CC: Roger. Copy. And we're ready to copy the readouts if you have them now.
006:07:05 CC: The readings from the Status Display Panel.
006:07:08 Armstrong: Roger. It looks like we're about a - 80 feet out still. And we have a Main Red, Off; Main Green, On; Armed, Off: Secondary Hi, On; Secondary Lo, On; Attitude, On; Rigid, Off; Power, On; and can't quite see the dock yet.
006:07:27 CC: Roger. Copy.
006:07:32 Scott: We're using a sextant to get those.
006:07:37 CC: Understand.
006:07:38 Scott: Pretty bright up here.
006:07:47 CC: Roger. Copy.
006:07:59 Armstrong: Okay. Now work it in - I guess the thing to do here is to align the Platform.
006:08:11 Armstrong: Right?
006:08:12 Armstrong: Let's see, how much time do we have?
006:08:16 Scott: We have an hour.
006:08:18 Armstrong: How much before REV? How much before the SPC Yaw?
006:08:24 Scott: That's an hour.
006:08:25 Armstrong: An hour from now?
006:08:26 Scott: Yes.
006:08:27 Scott: But we ought to do the Platform Parallelism before then.
006:08:29 Scott: Pitch down so I can get the Moon in that dock.
006:08:49 Scott: Turn around so you can be looking. [Whispering] I wonder where the heck it is?
006:08:59 Scott: [Garble] okay. [Garble].
006:09:20 Scott: Where the heck is that?
006:09:28 Scott: Spotmeter is in the left-hand little food box. Can you get it out?
006:09:32 Armstrong: Okay. If you could be quiet for a minute.
006:09:35 Armstrong: Let's make sure we don't drift into it.
006:09:52 Scott: See a scanner and everything.
006:09:54 Scott: Okay. She's all yours.
006:10:03 Armstrong: Now you have to keep looking, for me, for a second.
006:10:04 Scott: Okay.
006:10:11 Armstrong: Okay.
006:10:12 Scott: Okay. I'd like to get some pictures if I can - and I'd like to get some good ones.
006:10:25 Armstrong: I tried it [garble]. Darkside is [garble].
006:10:40 Scott: It's as stable as a rock. Isn't it?
006:11:08 Scott: It sure...
006:11:11 Scott: Can you go around and check the dock light?
006:11:13 Armstrong: What am I going to pick to align the Platform?
006:11:18 Scott: Where you going to do it?
006:11:20 Armstrong: We want to try to do the Platform Parallelism [garble] back off and align it here.
006:11:25 Scott: Yes. You're right.
006:11:27 Scott: You're at 6 frames per second.
006:11:28 Armstrong: Yes.
006:11:39 Scott: [Garble.]
006:11:51 Armstrong: While I'm here I'd like to align the Platform. I'm in a good position.
006:11:56 Scott: Okay. Just yaw left to 10 before we...
006:11:57 Armstrong: Okay.
006:12:01 Armstrong: I can't see it now so...
006:12:03 Scott: You're okay. I'll call you.
006:12:11 Scott: Okay. Now yaw right and you'll be okay.
006:12:15 Scott: You're on the wrong [garble].
006:12:18 Armstrong: Sorry about that.
006:12:20 Armstrong: See him?
006:12:21 Scott: You're okay.
006:12:22 Scott: Keep translating.
006:12:25 Scott: Why don't you go down where you can see?
006:12:30 Armstrong: Okay. Align [garble] Platform.
006:13:01 Scott: Let's see. They didn't ever tell us to turn it back on, did they?
006:13:06 CC: Hawaii, Gemini VIII.
006:13:08 Scott: Coder's coming on. Radar's in Standby anyway.
006:13:13 Armstrong: Okay now [garble].
006:13:20 Armstrong: We might do that now.
006:13:21 Scott: ...do the what?
006:13:22 Armstrong: ...take a picture of it.
006:13:23 Armstrong: Did the Index Bar extend?
006:13:24 Armstrong: Index Bar.
006:13:29 Scott: Oh yes, why don't you get - no, you want to stay here.
006:13:32 Armstrong: ...let's take a picture of it.
006:13:35 Armstrong: I might do that.
006:13:44 Scott: We're supposed to set up the Agena in Flight Control Mode 6, at 06:15 to 06:25.
006:13:51 Armstrong: Right.
006:13:54 Scott: Okay.
006:13:55 Armstrong: Yes.
006:13:56 Scott: So you want to do that?
006:13:59 Armstrong: Yes. I'll probably have to back off a little bit.
006:14:01 Scott: You're supposed to be aligning here anyway.
006:14:03 Armstrong: I am.
006:14:11 Armstrong: Okay. It gives you an idea of what Platform-Mode stationkeeping is like.
006:14:14 Scott: Yes.
006:14:15 Armstrong: It's a sort of a way...
006:14:17 Armstrong: I'd visualized it, except a little farther back.
006:14:22 Armstrong: I can tell. I can usually see that...
006:14:23 Scott: Firing thrusters?
006:14:25 Scott: Wait a little bit. Okay. Now drifting in a little close. Let's say I wanted to fire a little forward thruster and wanted to tell you I'm going to fire a little forward thruster and then I wait a little bit and you say okay, and then I'll say okay, now.
006:14:42 Scott: Like that.
006:14:47 Armstrong: Okay. Put the Bus Arm to Dock.
006:14:56 Scott: For your Index Extend?
006:14:59 Armstrong: Oh. I am out of film.
006:15:01 Scott: [Garble] give it to me and I'll change it.
006:15:06 Scott: I'll get it.
006:15:08 Scott: I don't mind. I'll write on the one we did.
006:15:11 Armstrong: Okay.
006:15:27 Scott: What would you recommend for an exposure?
006:15:30 Armstrong: I'll tell you in just a minute.
006:15:49 Scott: A target - what lens? 18mm lens?
006:15:51 Armstrong: Yes.
006:15:54 Scott: 1/200 and an f:16.
006:15:56 Armstrong: 1/200 and an f:16. Okay.
006:16:30 Armstrong: Let's align the Platform.

006:32:17 Armstrong: RKV, Gemini [garble].
006:32:19 CC: Gemini VIII, RKV.
006:32:21 Armstrong: Okay. We're sitting about 2 feet out...
006:32:22 CC: Go ahead.
006:32:23 Armstrong: ...[garble]. We'll go ahead and dock.
006:32:25 CC: Roger. Stand by for a couple of minutes here.
006:32:42 CC: Okay, Gemini VIII. We have T/M solid. You're looking good on the ground. Go ahead and dock.
006:32:50 Armstrong: Okay. We're going to go ahead and dock.
006:33:40 CC: Okay, Gemini VIII. It looks good here from the ground. We're showing Cone Rigid. Everything looks good for the docking.
006:33:47 Armstrong: Okay. We're going to cycle our Rigid/Stop switch now.
006:33:50 CC: Roger.
006:33:52 Armstrong: Flight, we are docked!
006:33:58 Armstrong: Yes. It's a - really a smoothie.
006:34:01 CC: Roger. Hey, congratulations: This is real good.
006:34:07 Scott: You couldn't have the thrill down there that we have up here.
006:34:10 CC: Ha! Ha! Ha!
006:34:24 Armstrong: Okay. Just for your information, the Agena was very stable and at the present time we are having no noticeable oscillations at all.
006:34:37 CC: Roger. Copy. Agena very stable and no noticeable oscillations. Very good!
006:34:42 Armstrong: Roger.
006:35:26 CC: Gemini VIII...
006:35:29 CC: ...RKV. We'd like to update that SPC load that did not get in correctly. Could you give us UHF Enable and the Encoder, Off, please?
006:35:42 Armstrong: I think we'd rather - can we send it in on the Encoder ourselves?
006:35:52 Armstrong: You just want to load an SPC again. Correct?
006:35:55 CC: Roger. We did not get all the SPC load in correctly over Hawaii, and we want to finish the SPC load from here.
006:36:04 CC: And you can not do that from where you are.
006:36:20 CC: Do you copy, Gemini VIII ?
006:36:22 Armstrong: Yes. We copy. We're just discussing it a little bit.
006:36:42 Armstrong: Okay. We're going to go along with you on that, and want you to make double sure that you get the right load.
006:36:50 CC: Roger. Wilco. We sure will.
006:37:08 CC: And be advised, Gemini VIII, the SPC at the present time is Disabled, so regardless of what your load does, we'll still be okay.
006:37:16 Scott: We'd like you to make double sure.
006:37:18 CC: Roger.
006:37:21 CC: Okay. Can you give us the Encoder OFF, please?
006:37:22 Scott: It's off.
006:37:24 CC: Roger. Thank you. We are sending the SPC loads.
006:37:54 CC: Okay, Gemini VIII. The SPC's are in. We have reset the Reset Timer, and you may have control back again.
006:38:05 Scott: Thank you very much.
006:38:07 CC: Roger.

006:39:17 CC: Gemini VIII, we would also like to send the V/M word. Would you turn the Encoder off, please?
006:39:26 Armstrong: Okay. Encoder off.
006:39:29 CC: Roger. We're transmitting the V/M now.
006:39:38 CC: Okay. Turn the Encoder back on.
006:40:32 CC: Gemini VIII, RKV. We're about to have LOS. You're looking real good from the ground. Congratulations on Rendezvous and Docking.
006:40:40 Scott: Okay.
006:40:42 Armstrong: Thank you, Scotty.
006:40:48 Scott: [Garble.]

006:48:30 CC: Gemini, Scotty confirmed DCC Flight Test Continuous?
006:49:31 Armstrong: Affirmative. Flight Test to Continuous.
006:50:20 CC: Minus 3 minutes and counting. CM1.
006:51:27 Armstrong: We just completed yawing the Agena to 090 and yaw was at precisely 1½ degrees per second on the Yaw Maneuver, and it took [garble] seconds to go 90 degrees. The Gemini Platform has - may have drifted excessively since the last time we aligned it; see, it was almost an hour ago.
006:52:03 Scott: Yes, that's right.
006:52:18 Armstrong: The alignments are from 06:13 to 06:23 - let's see - we contend that it was the Agena and control systems.

006:55:05 Armstrong: This is Gemini VIII. A...
006:55:13 CC: Roger, VIII. Reading you loud and clear. I have some information for you. Ready to copy?
006:55:16 Scott: Stand by.
006:55:19 Scott: What kind of information is it?
006:55:20 CC: Well, first of all, it's about the SPC Yaw Maneuver. I have some dope for you to follow.
006:55:35 Scott: Do you mean the SPC Yaw Maneuver?
006:55:38 CC: Roger. We believe we have the load in and we would like to have you Enable the SPCs and let the Agena start coming through. If you run into trouble and the Attitude Control System in the Agena goes wild, just send in Command 400 to turn it off and take control with the spacecraft. Did you copy that?
006:55:58 Scott: Roger. We understand.
006:56:01 CC: Roger. Okay. Stand by.
006:56:07 CC: I have a nodal update for you.
006:56:12 Scott: Stand by.
006:56:15 Scott: Got to get the right book.
006:56:20 Scott: Go ahead.
006:56:22 CC: Roger. Node: 07:04:46; Rev 5; 67.5 east; 15 plus 52, right ascension.
006:56:45 Scott: Roger. Understand. Node: 07:04:46; Rev 5; 67.5 east; 15 plus 52, right ascension.
006:56:58 CC: Roger. That's correct. And would you verify that the L-Band radar is off, please?
006:57:05 Scott: Roger. We should have Off command. Do you want us to do it again?
006:57:09 CC: No. This is the spacecraft L-Band radar.
006:57:15 Scott: Roger. The L-Band in the transponder is off.
006:57:18 CC: Roger. Thank you. And would you put the ECS O2 heater off?
006:57:25 Scott: Okay. Going off.
006:57:27 CC: Roger. And T/M down here is saying that the Fuel Cell O2 and H2 Heater circuit breaker had opened up during the Pacific pass and we would like to know if Dave found that circuit breaker open, and did he reset it after Hawaii?
006:57:41 Armstrong: That's affirmative. He did find it open and he did reset it after Hawaii.
006:57:46 CC: Roger. Big Brother is watching.
006:57:49 Scott: Say again.
006:57:51 CC: And could you give us an OAMS Propellant Quantity readout, please?
006:57:59 Scott: Okay. 51 percent right now.
006:58:01 CC: Roger. 51 percent. Thank you.
006:58:41 Armstrong: Now we yawed around to 180 now for the Parallelism Check. It's gone real well.
006:58:46 CC: Understand. You've yawed to 180 for the Parallelism Check.

007:17:15 Scott: We have serious problems here. We're - we're tumbling end over end up here. We're disengaged from the Agena.
007:17:22 CC: Okay. We got your Spacecraft Free indication here.
007:17:26 Scott: Say again.
007:17:28 CC: We're showing your Spacecraft Free.
007:17:31 CC: What seems to be the problem?
007:17:35 Armstrong: We're rolling up and we can't turn anything off.
007:17:39 Armstrong: Continuously increasing in a left roll.
007:17:45 CC: Roger.
007:18:22 CC: Gemini VIII, CSQ.
007:18:25 Armstrong: Stand by.
007:18:33 Scott: We have a violent left roll here at the present time and we can't turn the RCS's off, and we can't fire it, and we certainly have a roll. [Garble] stuck hand control.
007:18:45 CC: Roger.

007:20:05 Scott: Okay. We're regaining control of the spacecraft slowly, in RCS Direct.
007:20:11 CC: Roger. Copy.
007:21:12 Armstrong: We're pulsing the RCS pretty slowly here so we don't control roll right. We're trying to kill our roll rate.
007:21:19 CC: Okay. Fine. Keep at it.
Transcription break.
007:22:35 CC: VIII, CSQ. How much RCS have you used and are you just on one ring?
007:22:41 Armstrong: That's right. We are on one ring, trying to save the other ring. We started with two rings, but now we are on one ring.
007:22:48 CC: Roger. What about RCS usage?
007:22:51 Armstrong: Now okay. We're down to 1,700 pounds right now on RCS B.
007:22:57 CC: Roger.
007:22:58 Armstrong: We now have about - have about 2,350 on A.
007:23:01 CC: Okay. Copy.
007:23:35 CC: VIII, CSQ. How are you doing?
007:23:39 Armstrong: We're working on it.
007:23:40 CC: Okay. Relax. Everything's okay.
007:23:51 Armstrong: The spacecraft-Agena combination took off. Yaw and roll, and we had ACS, Off, and affirmative 7 hours.
007:24:01 CC: Roger. Understand. Can you see the Agena now?
007:24:04 Armstrong: [Garble] up. We turned the spacecraft system on, tried to stabilize, and in so doing we may have burned out our lower left thrusters.
007:24:13 CC: Okay. I copy. Can you - do you have visual sighting of the Agena right now?
007:24:17 Scott: No. We haven't seen the Agena since we undocked a little while ago.
007:24:21 CC: Okay.
007:24:34 Scott: The [garble]...

007:37:24 Scott: Hello Hawaii, Gemini VIII.
007:37:25 CC: Roger. We'd like a readout on your switch positions and OAMS, and on-board reading of your OAMS remaining. Over.
007:37:30 Scott: Okay. We have 22 percent showing on the gauge. We don't have any yaw or roll control, and cannot regain control of the yaw thrusters, apparently none of them. We do have - apparently the pitch thrusters are operative. And also, we're slowly getting back to the proper attitude here.
007:38:07 CC: Roger. Copy, Gemini, and be advised they're planning to come into a -3 area. They're looking into 6 or 7-3 at this time. They would like you to enter Module 4 and the ATM computer. Over.
007:38:23 Armstrong: Okay. We'll go ahead and do that.
007:38:27 CC: And also get into Retro Attitude as soon as possible. Over.
007:38:33 Armstrong: [Garble.]

007:38:51 Armstrong: Go ahead.
007:38:55 CC: Roger. Which systems are you using now? OAMS or RCS?
007:39:01 Armstrong: We're on OAMS right now.
007:39:05 CC: Roger. And do you have any problem at all with the RCS control?
007:39:12 Armstrong: In Direct we're okay. We haven't really thoroughly checked out the RCS. That's the only way we got it to fire a while ago.
007:39:19 CC: Roger. Copy.
007:39:36 CC: Gemini VIII, Hawaii.
007:39:37 Armstrong: Go ahead.
007:39:39 CC: Roger. We'd like you to place your Entry C-Band beacon to Continuous and Flight advises they personally prefer 7-3. That will give you approximately 1½ more hours.
007:39:53 Armstrong: Okay. We do have the spacecraft under control at the present time. We're in slowly drifting flight - do have a slight amount of control. We have - 1,550 pounds showing on RCS B and 2,400 on A.
007:40:18 CC: Say again on B, please.
007:40:20 Armstrong: 1550.
007:40:21 CC: Copy.

007:42:15 CC: Gemini VIII, Hawaii.
007:42:16 Armstrong: Go ahead.
007:42:21 CC: Do you have any idea of the Agena position at present? Over.
007:42:24 Armstrong: We saw it about 10 minutes ago. It looked to be a mile or so underneath us.
007:42:32 CC: Roger. Copy. Would you place your T/M switch to Real-Time/ACQ-Aid, please?
007:42:35 Armstrong: Real-Time/ACQ-Aid.
007:42:44 CC: Could you give us a sequence of events on just what happened? Over.
007:42:52 Armstrong: It happened when we were in Agena-spacecraft combination of 0, 180, 0 and we were stabilized there. We had the Attitude Control Power off in the spacecraft, OAMS Attitude Control Power off and we sent 041 Command to Agena to turn the recorder on. The spacecraft-Agena combination started a violent roll.

008:10:44 CC: Gemini VIII, RKV CapCom.
008:10:47 Armstrong: Go ahead RKV, Gemini VIII.
008:10:50 CC: Roger. Do you have any idea where the Agena is?
008:10:55 Armstrong: No, we haven't seen it.
008:10:57 CC: Okay.
008:11:00 CC: Over Hawaii, we were having LOS at the time that you were giving us your switch positions. We copied as far as you had sent Commmnd 041 Recorder, On, and at that time the spacecraft started to roll. Would you continue from there, specifically what your on-board switch positions were and what you did with it?
008:11:23 Armstrong: We had Attitude Control Power, On, and went to Rate Command.
008:11:27 CC: Roger.
008:11:47 Armstrong: And when we started to yaw - it seems that it was the Agena control system.
008:11:53 CC: Roger.
008:11:54 Armstrong: Since we did not hear any of our thrusters fire.
008:11:59 CC: Roger.
008:12:03 CC: Stand by [garble].
008:12:05 Armstrong: And we sent ACS Off and turned the spacecraft power On, OAMS power On, and tried to regain control of the combination.
008:12:15 CC: Roger.
008:12:19 Armstrong: And we were just barely able to hold our own, but the rates were too excessive for an undocking, so we continued to attempt to send an ACS Off-cycle [garble] and at the same time we checked our OAMS switch position.
008:12:34 CC: Roger.
008:12:39 Armstrong: We switched it - we tried to turn our own Spacecraft Control System, Off, and the combination continued to wind up, so we had to go back On before the rates became intolerable.
008:12:53 CC: Roger.
008:13:00 Armstrong: After we got the rates down to a point where we felt we could safely undock, we did so, and maneuvered away from the Agena at several feet per second as quickly as possible. We had been watching our propellant quantity go down from 50 to below 30 percent. After turning the OAMS, Off, and still in bias power and everything - motor valves off, we were still rolling; we activated the RCS. Did not have any ACME, and we regained control of the spacecraft in Direct, slowly.
008:13:51 CC: Roger.
008:13:55 Armstrong: Then after getting stabilized, we checked out our whole Thrust Control System and found that we had no yaw or roll control - or we had no yaw control of the yaw thrusters since our roll was in the yaw jets, and after that...
008:14:15 Scott: ACS was really going.
Armstrong: ...we had - vision; we could see the ACS thrusters firing on the Agena when we had ACS off, so we felt that something was definitely wrong.
008:14:29 CC: Roger.
008:14:30 Armstrong: After checking the spacecraft systems we found Thruster Number 8 apparently failed Open at the present time and this could have been true at the time of the incident, although we can't - cannot verify that at this time.
008:14:44 CC: Roger. Stand by. We'll update that new TR time.
008:14:53 Scott: Got it.
008:14:54 CC: Okay. And I'd also like to send your Load.
008:15:00 Scott: Reentry Load.
008:15:04 Scott: DCS light on.
008:15:05 CC: The ATM okay?
008:15:06 Scott: ATM has loaded Module 4A snd verified 4A.
008:15:09 Armstrong: Roger [garble].
008:15:10 CC: Roger. We're having LOS. We haven't updated your Load and TR.
008:15:16 Armstrong: Okay.
008:15:17 CC: Okay. Did he have that...
008:15:18 Armstrong: What's the TR?
008:15:19 CC: TR time is for Area 7-3, which is approximately an hour and 15 minutes from now.
008:15:29 Armstrong: What 's our next AOS?
008:15:33 CC: Next AOS should be CSQ.
008:15:36 Scott: Give us a time for that, please.
008:15:51 Scott: 8:52, TR is at 9...
008:15:53 CC: Roger. Should be 8 hours, 52 minutes - 8 hours, 52 minutes.
008:16:00 Scott: Okay. Thank you.
008:16:03 Armstrong: We're in the process of restowing for Reentry.
008:16:21 CC: Gemini VIII, RKV. Did you blow the OAMS Reg switch?
008:16:27 Armstrong: No, we have not yet. We thought about it but we don't need to yet, I guess.
008:16:34 CC: Roger.
008:16:48 Scott: Oh shoot! How am I ever going to stow that visor? I've got to put the TV monitor in, too.
008:16:58 Armstrong: Yes, I know you do.
008:17:00 Armstrong: Do you went to do that before you get too tied up?

008:18:10 Scott: We should have asked them about purging the fuel cells.
008:18:12 Armstrong: Yes. Well, let's go ahead and do it.
008:18:22 Armstrong: Purging fuel cells at 8 minutes and 8 seconds - correction, that's 8 hours, 18 minutes.

009:30:52 Scott: We couldn't.
009:31:21 Armstrong: Oh, let's see - one other thing. Do you have those coordinates for the landing point?
009:31:31 Scott: 136 east, I think.
009:31:52 Scott: All we have is 45-1, 16-1.
009:32:02 Armstrong: No, it's not that. The ones they gave you.
